The Best Gift I Can Give Myself

I used to wait a lot.

I waited until my hair was straight to date the guy i like. I waited until my arguments were perfect to speak up. I waited until my German was good enough to present at work. I waited and waited until i was ready.

The thing is it could take forever for me to be ready. And i don’t have forever.

“the truth about forever is that it is happening right now” ― Sarah Dessen

Last month i completed Seth Godin’s altMBA program. I was actually thinking to do normal MBA but i was hesitating due to the amount of time and money that have to be invested. Therefore, the program sounded like the perfect alternative for me: It is an intensive, 4-week online workshop designed for high-performing individuals who want to level up and lead.

Initially I thought i would get normal lessons on business & strategy. What i received was beyond what i expected. It was 4-week pure sprint of shipping my works. The program consists of 13 projects that need to be published, alongside with giving and getting personalised feedbacks, sharing reflections, coaching sessions, and a lot of group discussions.

The topics of the projects are varied. From goal settings to generating ideas. From making rational decisions to ignoring sunk costs. From empathising with our audience to closing the sale. From leveraging constraints to changing our narrative. From public speaking to making the change we seek to make.

The hardest part for me was actually hitting the Publish button. Ah all the resistance! what if it’s not good enough, what if i sound stupid, what if… But what if i had no choice but to ship: my group was counting on me, my coaches were there to nudge me, and i made a promise to myself to commit.

The altMBA taught me that the best gift that i could give myself and others is to show up. And to show up often.

It pushed me to push through. And i did. And i will do it again, because what i have learned cannot be taken away from me. I am not waiting anymore.

It has been an intense and amazing journey for me so far. Not to mention, all the wonderful connections and friendships i made during the process.

If you have any questions on the altMBA, feel free to reach out to me here. You can also use my name when you apply, i think they will fast-track their review and get you moving that way.

So, what’s the gift that you want to give to yourself and others today?
